Filters are not a formality

A loaded filter starves the blower, drops efficiency and can freeze the coil. In a Greenville summer with pollen and long run times, check monthly and change on sight rather than on a calendar rule.

Give the outdoor unit room to breathe

Keep two feet of clear space around the condenser and rinse the coil fins gently from the outside in. Shrubs, mulch piles and stacked yard tools all raise head pressure and shorten compressor life.

Watch the condensate line

Cooling humid Upstate air produces a surprising amount of water. When the condensate line clogs, that water finds the ceiling below the air handler. A safety switch should shut the system down first — if your AC keeps cutting out on humid days, the drain is the first place to look.

The electrical side matters too

Air systems are the largest electrical load in most homes. Breakers that trip when the compressor starts, a burning smell at the disconnect, or lights dimming on startup are electrical symptoms, not just HVAC ones.
